Vastu Shastra is often imagined as something that requires breaking walls or redesigning a house from scratch. In practice, most homes benefit from a handful of small, low-cost adjustments. Here are five worth starting with.
1. Keep the main entrance clear and well-lit
The main door is traditionally considered the point through which energy enters the home, so it's worth keeping the area in front of it clean, well-lit and free of clutter — shoe racks, dustbins or stacked items placed directly in front of the door are best moved elsewhere. A working light near the entrance, kept on at dusk, is a simple change many Vastu consultants recommend.
2. Let the northeast corner stay light
The northeast (Ishaan) corner of a home or room is traditionally treated as the most auspicious, associated with clarity and calm. Where possible, keep this corner relatively open and light — avoid using it as a dumping ground for heavy furniture, storage boxes or a bathroom if you have a choice in the layout. Even a small altar or an open, tidy space here is considered favourable.
3. Sleep with your head toward the south
Bedroom orientation is one of the more commonly cited Vastu adjustments. Sleeping with the head toward the south (or east) is traditionally preferred, while sleeping with the head toward the north is generally avoided. If your bed can be repositioned without much trouble, this is often one of the easiest changes to make.
4. Keep the kitchen in the southeast, and cook facing east
The kitchen is traditionally associated with Agni (fire), and the southeast corner of the home is considered its ideal placement. If moving the kitchen isn't practical, a smaller adjustment — positioning the stove so you face east while cooking — is often suggested as a workable alternative.
5. Reduce clutter, especially in the center of the home
The central part of a home, known as the Brahmasthan, is traditionally kept as open and uncluttered as possible — avoiding heavy beams, staircases or storage directly in the center where feasible. Beyond Vastu, simply reducing clutter here and elsewhere in the house is something most people notice a difference from fairly quickly.
When to go beyond the basics
These five adjustments are a reasonable starting point for most homes, but Vastu for a full house, office or a new construction plan is more layout-specific, and often benefits from a proper site assessment. If you're renovating, buying a new property, or want a full review of your existing layout, a consultation is worth considering before making structural changes.
